Virtually all English language material unless you go to a country-specific site(fr, de, it, es)
News Alerts available "as it happens" or daily.

AltaVista

7,000 news sources. Search up to 1 month (2 weeks is the default). Virtually all English .

Newsnow.co.uk

Automatically searching 16,000 news sources every 5 minutes. Access to some requires a subscription.

BBC Arguably the most "international" perspective
All stories that appeared on the BBC site back to 1997.
MSNBC Hottest US news, plus international
CNN Vying with BBC for international coverage
WorldNews.com Excellent collection of regional / country /topical sites.  Provides Free alerts
Your Hometown Newspaper
     New York Times
    Washington Post
     LA Times,        etc.
Many have a specialty (e.g., Washington Post - government)
They may provide fee email alerts or headlines (e.g., NY Times)
