Overview

Snap has changed its name to NBCi.com. It is very much a consumer-oriented service (rather than research-oriented) but it does have pretty decent search functionality (Boolean, etc.).  It also has a very large database, using Inktomi, which also provides the database for HotBot.  The similarity between HotBot does not end there.  In NBCi's Power Search version, you'll see that the search choices are very much a scaled-down version of HotBot's choices (using even much of the same wording.). Because of the combination of simplicity, large database, and attached directory, it would be a good choice for the casual searcher.

Strengths
Weaknesses
Large database (Inktomi)
Reasonably good functionality (phrase searching, Boolean, etc.)
Simple, for the less-heavy-duty searcher
A search of NBCi's directory is automatically integrated into all searches.
For advanced features, you might as well go to HotBot, which has more features, in much the same format.

On NBCi's home page you'll find:

On NBCi's Advanced Search Page, you'll find:

Search Features Provided by NBCi

Boolean

In both the home page and advanced version, you can use either simple Boolean, or full Boolean

 Field Searching

NBCi provides for the searching of two specific fields -- title and links:

Truncation

In the Advanced version, you may choose "All forms of the words." in the "Search for" window." Truncation in Boolean statements is not available.

This type of automatic truncation has its pitfalls, often returning a lot of non-related terms.

NBCI's Directory

NBCi has a reasonably sized, well-organized directory.  For some searchers, it is important to note that the directory has both "Arts and Humanities" and "Science & Technology" top-level categories, which are missing in most of the directories provided by search engines.

A very positive aspect of searching in NBCi is that for all searches you are automatically shown matching hits (both categories and web pages) from the directory.

When using the directory, at any level you are given the option of searching -- either within all of NBCi, or just within the current category of subcategory. (Excellent feature!)

Summary

NBCi provides simplicity for the casual searcher and a moderate degree of sophistication for the more serious searcher.  Its use of the large Inktomi database and the excellent integration of its directory should provide some significant competition to Go.com and Lycos (which have somewhat similar interfaces and functionality, but significantly smaller databases.)  One of the outstanding add-ons is "Images" which is easy to use and accesses a large number of photos. The serious searcher will probably put NBCi further down on their list of preferred engines (after Northern Light, AltaVista, Google, and HotBot)
