Excite News and Changes

.                - List of suggested additional search terms
                 - Automatic display of matching directory headings (you can now get to them by clicking on the
                    the "Category Search" link.)
                 - "Search for more documents like this one" in results records.
                 - The relevance percentage figures (probably not much of a loss)
.
.           Some things are being integrated in a different way.  For example, a search on "laparoscopy" formerly
produced a nice definition from a medical encyclopedia (ADAM), at the top of the page.  It is still there,
as the first record, but not clearly identifiable as a definition (actually the encyclopedia article.)  However,
there is now a "Quick Results" box on that page which leads to added resources on the topic.
.
Too bad about this. Excite had been doing a wonderful job of integrating diverse resources and tools
into its results pages.  Looks like the "least-common-denominator" folks are winning this one. (6/00)

. . .           The "More Search" option on the advanced page presents a list, by channel, of
the numerous special search features (phone directories, stock quotes, weather, etc.)
found among the various Excite channels. This is a useful way for the user to get a
quick glimpse of these numerous and handy add-ons.

HotBot News and Changes
. .        HotBot is no longer grouping its directory categories by "channels" (formerly "Stay
Informed," "Use Technology," "Plan a Purchase," and "Enrich Your Life.")  You will still find,
as you browse the categories, that additional channel-type  features such as stock quotes, job
listing directories, etc. are still presented on the categories pages. (7/99)      .

 Northern Light News and Changes

As well as popularity, Northern Lights relevance determination is based on the following
(quoting directly from the press release):
"- statistical measures such as query term frequency, inverse document frequency of
the term and length of the document,
           - document date,
           - word context information such as whether or not the word  or phrase queried
              occurs in the document title,
           - document classification based on Northern Light's patented technology for
automatically classifying the Web and organizing results into Custom Search Folders (tm),
              and
           - natural language analysis of the query, which analyzes the specific syntax and semantics
             of the user's query.'
